My friends, I am shocked to the rapid changes that are happening in our world regarding the COVID-19 virus. I imagine that you are as shocked and scared as I am with the crazy fast spread of this disease and for us to be quarantined.

Take this time to adapt to a new normal. Once we get this is under control, our normal will be changed. The question is how will you take the time to get through your days. Spending time outside will be an excellent addition to add to your day. This does not cost you anything but time in your day.

Spending time in nature has the ability to boost your immune system because of the natural phytocides that provide anti-viral properties. The sun can also provide a does of vitamin D which is a natural immune booster as well as providing relief from anxiety and depression and can increase your mood.

Phytoncide is a substance emitted by plants & trees and generally means the aroma of the forest. “Phyton” means “plant” in Latin, and “cide” means to exterminate. Phytoncides are produced to help plants & trees protect themselves from harmful insects and germs.

Here are some ways you can enjoy some outdoor time:

  • Walk down your own street, or local park
  • Pay attention to your surroundings,  and make sure your phone is on airplane mode
  • Take some deep breaths
  • Take note of sights, sounds, smells, colors, textures that surround you
  • Take note of the shift in your mood, and mental clarity, reduction of tension, anxiety and stress

Take an inventory of your senses and your physical and mental well being. The world is not coming to an end (hopefully), but changing to new normal. This is going to be your ticket to developing your mental game and persistence through this storm cycle. Natural environments do not have the properties to spread viruses, their properties actually reduce them. Go a hug a tree if you need some love.

Let’s brave this new storm together. Stay tuned for virtual tours, classes, and recreation therapy sessions.

Stay safe my friends, am sending you love and health. Diana
